Kirby Star Allies Demo | Review

Kirby Star Allies is the first Kirby game on the Nintendo Switch, and thankfully Nintendo has decided to release a playable demo for the game. But how good is the demo?

The demo contains multiplayer (including one Joycon each), two levels, and a few powerups. Unfortunately non of the powerups available to use in this game are new to the series, instead being the standard abilities like cutter, sword, and fire.

Star Allies allows the player to temporarily make friends with any standard enemy that has a powerup. The befriended enemy will then follow Kirby around, and can use its ability to progress the game through solving certain puzzles that require their power. Enemies that you befriend can also upgrade certain abilities that you have (example: enemies with fire can make sword Kirby have a fire sword).

Multiplayer is nice to see but the implementation is questionable. Only player one can be Kirby, and any other players will control an enemy that Kirby befriends. Thankfully other players can change the enemy they control fairly easily without any involvement being required from player one.

One of my concerns with Star Allies was that befriended enemies would go after any enemy they saw, making it difficult for player one to gain that enemies ability. Thankfully it appears that the you must attack an enemy before your friends do.

Ultimately the demo made me interested in a game I had previously no desire to play. Kirby has never been one of my favorite series' but Star Allies is actually something I'm interested in. Overall this is a good demo.

Kirby Star Allies launches March 16 for the Nintendo Switch. The free demo is available now.
