Pokemon Quest Review

Pokemon Quest is an upcoming Android and iOS app. It was also released recently for the Nintendo Switch, and takes advantage of the Switch's capabilities in new and interesting ways. That's called a joke

Pokemon Quest is not a core Pokemon game, and is more comparable to Pokemon Shuffle. It's a free-to-play game with all the issues that come with the genre.

Pokemon Quest has a unique artstyle. Every Pokemon is made up of cubes in a way that would make many clickbait sites call them "Minecraft-y", but they don't really resemble Minecraft that much. The graphics are simple, but can become a bit too busy when many Pokemon are fighting, and it can be hard to keep track of your team during battles.

Battles in Pokemon Quest are done in real time. You tap on one of the moves your Pokemon knows and your Pokemon will use that move. Your Pokemon will automatically walk toward enemy Pokemon, and will automatically use a non-specific attack that does little damage. Do be aware that you can't control the movements of your Pokemon, meaning it's incredibly difficult to strategize.

Musically this game isn't great. It will keep your ears occupied, which is more than I can say about the gameplay, but it still won't make your top ten favorite Pokemon songs list. This is a game that has a soundtrack because very few decent games lack one.

The quality of this game really depends on how you feel about the gameplay. In my opinion, it's the most boring type of game they could have made. Gameplay is so slow and uninvolved that they included a button that removes what little control you had, and makes the game literally control itself. Each round can take several minutes, and with how hard it is to keep track of yourself and how simple the gameplay is, this isn't a game I can recommend.

Yes, that's correct. I can't recommend a free game. Typically I'll end a review of a free game with "try it yourself" and honestly you should try it yourself, but Pokemon Quest isn't going to be many people's mobile game of choice. Pokemon Quest is less interesting than Pokemon Rumble in every way except the nice graphics in Pokemon Quest.
