The Virtual Console Probably Isn't Dead

The Virtual Console branding has been used when Nintendo has released an older game on a new system. And when Nintendo recently said "There are currently no plans to bring classic games together under the virtual console banner as has been done on other Nintendo systems" people lost their minds about the death of the Virtual Console.

There's a lot that this quote is ignoring, and I want to explain what's wrong with it.

1. This was a response to Kotaku. Nintendo doesn't like to say what they're planning. If a Nintendo spokesperson randomly said this then I'd believe them a lot more, but almost every company, when asked about something they haven't announced, will say "we aren't planning it".

2. Virtual Console is just a name. Nintendo could release their old games under any branding they want.

3. The concept for the Virtual Console is already on the Switch. If you go on the Switch's eShop right now, you'll find a lot of classic games (not by Nintendo) under the branding "Arcade Archives". This is the same idea as the Virtual Console but with different branding. And you could argue that they aren't Nintendo games, but the original quote never said anything about the classic games being made or published by Nintendo.

Does this mean we'll continue seeing Nintendo release classic games like they did on the Wii, Wii U, and 3DS? I don't know. No one outside Nintendo does. But the death of the Virtual Console branding doesn't mean those classic games won't ever see the light of day.
