Trivial Pursuit Live | Review

Trivial Pursuit Live is a trivia game based on the board game mostly by the same name. What worried me about this game on the Switch is that it was published by Ubisoft, the same people who made Wheel of Fortune for the Switch. Thankfully they appear to have put some actual effort into this one.

PROS:

-The art is decent. It isn't the most beautiful game by any means, but the characters are distinct enough that you can tell them apart. The framerate is stable enough for the type of game this is, and for the most part it looks quite smooth. The animations both on the characters and in the UI also look pretty good. Arguably the most important element visually is the font, and it's very clear and distinct from the backgrounds.

-Input delay is minimal. This might sound like a strange compliment to give a game, but after Wheel of Fortune was released around the same time and by the same publisher I think it's worth noting. It might not be perfect here, but it's good enough that I can't tell if there's a delay. This type of game doesn't really need a perfect response time, but it's nice to see regardless.

-Controller vibration is used wonderfully. When it's your turn, and when you submit your answer, the controller you're using will vibrate. It's subtle enough that you might not notice it's doing anything, but it's a great way to provide feedback to individual players.

-The touchscreen works very well. Everything you can do with a controller can be done with the touchscreen. The game is constantly looking for both controller inputs and touchscreen inputs, and makes the game display options accordingly. Honestly it's hard for me to write anything noteworthy here, because this feature just works.

CONS:

-Repeated questions are somewhat common. I've played maybe fifteen rounds, and I have seen some repeated questions. It still isn't common, and I suspect this is more of a coincidence than it is the game not having many questions available. I would suggest the game prioritize questions that either haven't been seen, or questions that haven't come up in awhile. The completely random nature of the questions is proving to be a problem from my experience.

-Character customization is limited. The amount of characters you start out with is somewhat small, and it either isn't possible to unlock more or it's difficult. All of the available characters are pretty generic as well, making it hard to find one that represents you. Personally I would love to see Mii support, but that's very uncommon on the Switch.

CONTROLLER REPORT:

The Joy-Con controllers work fine when using two or by using one on the side. I do wish there was an option to hold it vertically like a Wii Remote, but sadly it isn't an option. The Pro Controller works perfectly fine as well.

The GameCube controller is compatible but not very well. Selecting an answer on the game requires you to press the corresponding button (X is up, A is right, etc) and using a GameCube controller will require the player remapping the controls in their head. It's a functioning option, but it requires some additional thinking.

OVERALL OPINION:

I'm really impressed with the quality of this game. It's an excellent trivia game, and it's nice to have on the Switch. My issues with the game are pretty minor in comparison to the quality of the game. I strongly recommend this game if you're looking for a good trivia game in the Switch.

The game is also available on other systems, but I have not played those versions. I suspect the game works well on them as well, but that is speculation on my part.
