Scribblenauts Unlimited | Review

Note: I have not played the Switch/PlayStation 4/Xbox One version of the game. This review covers the Wii U, 3DS, Steam, and Android/iOS versions of the game.

The Scribblenauts series is very unappreciated, at least in my opinion. The series has always allowed players to get creative when solving puzzles by spawning almost anything they want. Scribblenauts Unlimited raised the bar for the series so high that there hasn't been a new game in the series that isn't a spinoff, and I don't know how they even could improve

PROS:

-You can almost anything. I know that's the point of the series, but I think it's expected that you can't actually spawn that many things. You can. If you want to spawn green pregnant lemonade you can do that. If you want to spawn a suicidal man there's nothing stopping you.

-Many things will interact. You can spawn the aforementioned suicidal man and give him a gun and he'll shoot himself (it isn't graphic). You can spawn a cannibal and another person and the cannibal will eat the other person (also not graphic). There are plenty of interactions random creations can have with each other, which adds a lot of potential for comedic moments.

-(Wii U only) You can play with another player. The other player isn't able to spawn anything, and the controls are limited, but another player can use a Wii Remote to possess almost any object you can spawn.

-The music is surprisingly catchy. The soundtrack to a game like this is probably not expected to be very good, but you'd be wrong for expecting otherwise. The songs are seemingly randomly selected, though I do think some levels are more likely to have certain songs than others. My personal favorite is "Vowelcano."

-(Wii U and Steam only) You can create and share your own objects. The creation process is a bit difficult to get the hang of, but you can make your own objects. You can also tell it how to interact with other objects and how other objects should react to it. Not exactly intuitive most of the time, but there's a lot of depth.

-(Wii U only) You can spawn some Nintendo characters. Link, Mario, the Master Sword, and more can be spawned. Unfortunately you can't do much with them, but they do have some built in functions like Link picking up the Master Sword and Mario fighting Bowser. It's simple, and somewhat boring, but it's cool to mess around with.

-(Steam) Custom creations are shared through the Steam Workshop. I love how easy the Steam Workshop is to use in most games, and it's no different here. Searching works great and adding the items to your game is a breeze.

CONS:

-(Android) The loading times are horrendous. I'm sure this will depend on the phone you're using, but on mine the game took a very long time to load levels. Otherwise performance was fine. I have not been able to test load times on iOS.

-(Android/iOS and 3DS) You can't create objects or download other people's objects. This kinda eliminates the "Unlimited" from the title of the game. It's a disappointing omission.

OVERALL OPINION:

Scribblenauts Unlimited is an excellent game if you're a fan of puzzle games. Unfortunately I can't speak for the quality of the Switch, PS4, or Xbox One versions released on the Scribblenauts Mega Pack, but hopefully I'll get to it in the future. I'd highly recommend the Wii U or Steam version of the game.
