Superola and the Lost Burgers | Review

Superola and the Lost Burgers is a runner game with inspiration from retro video games and internet memes. In other words it's somewhat cringy.

PROS:

-The artstyle is fine. It doesn't do anything great graphically, but it's perfectly serviceable for the price. Everything looks like what it's supposed to look like, which is good enough for me.

-The sound design is passable. Again, there's nothing great going on. Sound effects are simple and there's not much music. Nothing about the sound here is particularly bad, but it's clear this game doesn't cost much.

CONS:

-The gameplay is overly simple. Superola and the Lost Burgers only allows the player to jump (which also acts as swimming up in some levels) and shooting energy beams (represented by burgers for some reason) which clear out enemies that are somewhat far away but somewhat close to you. It's functional, but it would be vastly preferred if you could crouch, slow down, or speed up. Alternatively they could fix the next issue I have.

-The camera is way too zoomed in. This game doesn't allow you to see very far ahead, meaning you constantly hit enemies. I get the impression you're supposed to memorize enemy placement, but it leads to frustration from the blind jumps you have to make. The swimming levels are especially terrible in this regard, due to the player lacking in control.

-The comedy is boring. I try to avoid using words like "cringy" but it's very appropriate here. Rage faces are commonly used on characters and in backgrounds, doge appears very early on, and any other "joke" is a reference to another video game, but they're referencing something that spread on the internet so it doesn't have any level of comedy. Stuff like "all your base are belong to us" and "oh, my car" is the level of classic video game humor you can expect here.

OVERALL OPINION:

I found Superola and the Lost Burgers to be an incredibly boring time, which is the worst thing a developer can achieve. I would rather play Pokemon Let's Go than this, which is saying a lot for me. I don't recommend this game in the slightest and won't provide links to buy the game.
