Surgeon Simulator Anniversary Edition | Review

Surgeon Simulator is an indie game that was initially released as Surgeon Simulator 2013 for the 2013 Global Game Jam. The game got a lot of attention on YouTube, and a full version was later released.

The game has you completing various operations in whatever way you can.

-Surgeon Simulator looks nice. The graphics of surgeon simulator are simple, but they're realistic enough that you can see what you're doing (sometimes) but you aren't going to vomit from the realism. That being said, people who are sensitive to anything involving teeth or eyes might find certain missions hard to sit through.

-The soundtrack works well. There isn't a lot of variety to the types of songs you'll hear in the game, but the music in the background does a good job of fitting in with the mood of the mission you're on.

-There's co-op in the console versions. I'm always a fan of games that feature multiplayer, so the PlayStation 4 version of the game was immediately interesting to me. Each player controls a hand and must work together to help the patient survive the operation.

CONS:

-The physics always work against you. Surgeon Simulator has a heavy emphasis on the physics, and treating them as the enemy. Objects you need will constantly fall out of reach, and in some settings such as the moving ambulance, they can move out of reach without you even touching them.

-The co-op isn't very co-operative. You and your friend will be sharing the same screen, and you do collide with each other. This can lead to nice situations where one player can hold the syringe to stop the patient from bleeding while the other player does the actual surgery, but the syringe can still be easily touched by the one who isn't holding it. It's also common for one player to need to grab something on the opposite end of the screen, and the other player needs to awkwardly move out of the way.

-The point of view is irritating. You're constantly unable to see what you're interacting with. I get this game is a joke, and it isn't meant to be taken seriously, but it's stuff like the terrible camera angle that makes this game infuriating to play.

OVERALL OPINION:

Surgeon Simulator is a joke game. It's YouTuber bait. It's meant for someone to make a funny video about. The game constantly throws items out of reach, making it impossible for you to progress without restarting the mission. The camera angle is atrocious. And the co-op multiplayer (console only) fails to make the game much better.

Surgeon Simulator is available through these links, however I can't attest to the Nintendo Switch version, as it looks to be the same, but features a new name:

Nintendo Switch Digital: eShop
PlayStation 4 Digital: PlayStation Store
PC Digital: Steam | Humble Store
